Beyond the Stuff: What Your Clutter Is Trying to Tell You

We often think decluttering is about getting rid of physical things. We picture tackling a chaotic wardrobe, sorting through a jammed kitchen cupboard, or finally clearing out a garage full of forgotten items.

But what if decluttering isn't really about the "stuff" at all?

What if it’s actually about creating space? Space to breathe. Space to think. Space to finally hear yourself again.

This week, I sat down with Karen Capece, a professional organiser and KonMari consultant, for a deep-dive conversation about clutter, overwhelm, and why so many of us struggle to let things go. What struck me most from our chat is that we don't just hold onto physical possessions.

We hold onto stories. Old identities. Past versions of ourselves.

We cling to the "just in case" clothes, the gear for hobbies we never actually started, and the heavy expectations we once had for our lives. Often, the clutter around us is simply a physical reflection of the clutter within us.

Every Item Asks a Question

One specific idea from my conversation with Karen has stayed with me all week:

"Does this support the life I'm creating, or the life I've already outgrown?"

It’s a powerful question, and its magic lies in the fact that it applies to so much more than just our wardrobes. You can ask this exact same question of your calendar, your habits, your current commitments, your relationships, and the version of success you are chasing.

Taking your power back isn't always about what you add to your life. Sometimes, it’s about what you are willing to release.

The Hidden Cost of Holding On

Many of us play the delay game. We tell ourselves we’ll deal with the mess later—when we have more time, more energy, or more motivation.

But clutter doesn't just sit there quietly. It has a way of draining us behind the scenes.

  • It steals our focus by acting as a constant visual to-do list.

  • It creates decision fatigue before our day has even properly begun.

  • It anchors us to the past, keeping us connected to a version of ourselves we've already outgrown.

A Reflection For Your Week

Take a moment today to look around your home, your wardrobe, or even your digital calendar. Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?

  2. What am I trying to make space for?

  3. What would feel instantly lighter if I let it go?

Here is the good news: You don't need an entire free weekend. You don't need a complex, colour-coded sorting system. You don't need to be perfect. You just need to start with one small choice. Small choices create momentum, and momentum is what drives real change.

How to Start Decluttering When It Feels Overwhelming | Featuring Karen Capece

In this brand-new conversation, Karen and I dive deep into the emotional and practical sides of letting go.

What we explore in this episode:

  • Why overwhelm is a completely normal part of the decluttering journey.

  • How to start small and build momentum without burning out.

  • The deep emotional connection between our clutter and our identity.

  • Practical, sustainable ways to rehome your clothing intentionally.

  • Why self-compassion matters infinitely more than perfection.

  • How to design a home environment that supports your wellbeing rather than draining it.

This Week’s Challenge

I want to challenge you to choose just one drawer, one shelf, or one small category today. Look at what's inside and ask:

"Does this support the person I am becoming?"

Then, trust your gut and act on the answer.

Until next time,

Eve
