From Trend to Transformation: Why Secondhand Should Be Your First Choice

by Eve, founder of Project Emerald

At Eco Fest, I spoke about something simple—but deeply powerful:

The act of buying secondhand.

Not as a passing trend, but as a meaningful shift in how we think, consume, and show up in the world.

Because the truth is, we don’t have a clothing shortage—we have a circulation problem.

There are already enough clothes on this planet to dress the next six generations. Yet, we continue to produce more, often at great environmental and social cost.

So what if we paused for just a moment before buying something new and asked ourselves one question:

Could I find this secondhand first?

That small shift can have a big impact. It reduces waste, saves money, and often leads to something even more valuable—a stronger sense of personal style.

Through Project Emerald, I’m seeing this transformation firsthand. When women begin to shop more intentionally, they stop chasing trends and start dressing for themselves. Confidence grows. Identity sharpens. Style becomes personal again.

Because what we wear is more than fabric—it’s how we show up.

Eco Fest was a powerful reminder that everything in our ecosystem is connected. From the clothes we choose, to how we compost, to the essential (and often overlooked) role that snakes play in maintaining ecological balance—every choice matters.

Project Emerald exists to make that shift easier. To help turn secondhand into a first choice, not an afterthought.

This isn’t just about fashion.

It’s about behaviour change. It’s about community. It’s about movement.

Start small—but start.

Wear. Share. Care. 💚
