Slow and Steady Wins the Race: Lessons for a Sustainable Lifestyle

By Eve, Founder of Project Emerald

I was recently reminded of the timeless story of The Tortoise and the Hare — but this time, it came to life through my husband at a downhill mountain bike race.

He’d only been riding casually with our sons for three years, had never competed, and is nearing 50. Yet he went into the race with confidence, believing he could win.

Even when his bike fell apart on race morning, he didn’t give up. He trusted the process. Updates throughout the day kept us hopeful:

  • Bike repaired and ready to go.

  • Perfect parking spot secured.

  • The part he needed was in stock.

  • Entered in the open men’s category.

Nathan wins a downhill bike race against younger riders, representing Project Emerald’s “slow and steady” values.

The result? He won — beating a much younger local rider by more than 10 seconds! In mountain biking, that’s a big margin.

His secret? Conserve energy. Push where it matters. Stay on the bike.

This simple mindset is a perfect reminder that strategy, consistency, and intention matter more than speed, both in sports and in life.

Tortoise vs. Hare: A Lesson for Sustainability

The classic tale is more relevant than ever when we consider sustainable living and circular fashion:

  • The Hare: Rushes ahead, chases quick wins, burns out — just like the old take–make–waste model.

  • The Tortoise: Moves deliberately, focuses on long-term results, and wins through consistency.

At Project Emerald, we follow the Tortoise mindset:

  • Building a sustainable, circular economy one step at a time.

  • Prioritizing quality over quantity in fashion and lifestyle choices.

  • Moving forward with clarity, purpose, and intention — not hype.

How You Can Move Like the Tortoise

Being part of Project Emerald means you’re contributing to something bigger:

  • Supporting circularity over waste.

  • Choosing long-lasting, high-quality items.

  • Joining a community that lifts each other up.

  • Strengthening a sustainable ecosystem built to last.

Every thoughtful choice — from buying pre-loved clothing to reusing and repurposing — strengthens the circular economy we’re creating together.
