Hidden Beneath the Noise: What Walking 1,600 km Taught Cass Taaffe About Finding Yourself Again

We spend so much of our lives believing that the answers are somewhere outside of us.

In another book.

Another course.

Another promotion.

Another holiday.

Another achievement.

But what if the answer has been there all along—just hidden beneath the noise?

On this week’s episode of the Project Emerald Collective podcast, I sat down with Cass Taaffe, who did something many of us dream about, but few ever dare to do: she pressed pause.

When "Success" Leads to Burnout

After twenty years working in HR—burnt out from carrying everyone else's emotions—Cass made a decision that looked entirely irrational from the outside. She left her established career, packed up her life, and spent fourteen months travelling through Europe.

The centerpiece of her journey? Walking two Caminos across Spain—over 1,600 kilometres on foot.

Somewhere between one footstep and the next, a shift happened. Cass didn't magically transform into a completely different person; rather, she finally had enough quiet to hear her own voice again.

Silencing the "Internal Committee"

During our conversation, Cass shared a concept I had never heard framed quite this way: the "Internal Committee."

You know the one:

  • The voice telling you what you should be doing.

  • The one worrying about everyone else's expectations.

  • The one comparing your chapter 5 to someone else's chapter 20.

  • The one trying to optimise every single minute of every single day.

Most of us live with that committee running the board meeting 24/7.

Walking the Camino didn't magically fire the committee members. It simply stripped away the background noise so their voices lost their power—and eventually, Cass’s own inner voice became the loudest in the room.

I think so many women are craving exactly that right now. Not another productivity hack. Not another item on the endless to-do list. Just... space.

  • Space to breathe.

  • Space to think.

  • Space to remember what you actually want out of this life.

The Fear of Becoming a "Cliché"

One of my favourite moments in our chat was when Cass admitted she almost talked herself out of yoga teacher training because her inner critic warned she was becoming "a middle-aged cliché."

How many incredible opportunities do we walk away from because of silly stories like that?

Thankfully, Cass listened to something deeper. Today, yoga is one of the foundational practices that keeps her grounded. It was a gentle reminder that taking your power back isn't always loud or dramatic. Sometimes, it’s incredibly quiet:

  • It’s pausing before saying an automatic "yes."

  • It’s listening to your body instead of your calendar.

  • It’s noticing when something feels expansive rather than draining.

  • It’s choosing the next step, rather than trying to have your entire life figured out at once.

One Conscious Choice at a Time

That is the ultimate lesson of the Camino. You don’t walk 800 kilometres all at once. You simply walk to the next town. Then the next. Then the next.

Intentional living works the exact same way. You don't have to overhaul your entire life overnight—you just have to make one conscious choice today.

This Week’s Invitation

Before you make your next decision—big or small—pause.

Take one deep, deliberate breath. Notice what your body tells you before your mind starts negotiating. You might be surprised to find that you’ve known the answer all along.
